Vendor Fair Announcement

We are excited to work with our educational partners to bring you an interactive and engaging opportunity. Come meet and learn more about how their products and services can be used to bridge the digital equity divide in your school community. The virtual vendor fair will take place from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM on February 2, 2021. Participants will have the opportunity to visit each vendor and be entered into a raffle.


School Libraries: Bridging the Digital Equity Divide

Digital equity is a complex set of conditions that requires every student to have access to affordable broadband, adequate devices, necessary software, digital literacy skills, and a community of support. This conference looks at the role school libraries can and do play in ensuring digital equity for all students, including how they partner with the school community, parents and caregivers, and their local public library to bridge the digital equity divide. Gain skills, ideas, and support towards providing equitable digital access to all students. Conference registrants will have access to all live sessions as well as access to all session recordings.

As we confront the inequities that have been amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic, we must work together with intentionality to create systemic change. The digital equity divide is a problem with proposed solutions within reach. How can we leverage our expertise to transform our educational system to ensure that all students have access to the skills, ideas, and new learning available because of purposefully designed school library programs and partnerships?
Jennifer Cannell Bio
Dr. Jen Cannell recently returned to her hometown of Rochester, NY to serve as Assistant Professor and Director of the Graduate School Library Media Specialist  Program at St. John Fisher College. She has previously worked as a middle school librarian, Library Automation Coordinator, and as a School Library System Director. Jen is the Immediate Past President of the New York Library Association. She has a passion for learning and thrives on challenging work.

The COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated many inequities faced by specific student subgroups in schools across the United States. The sudden shift from brick-and-mortar to virtual learning has left many students of color to experience a loss in learning due to technology connectivity issues, resource deprivation, health disparities, and other pervasive issues that inhibit them from participating in high-quality educational experiences. While this crisis has resulted in devastating consequences for students, families, and communities, it has also provided a unique opportunity for educational professionals to recommit ourselves to improving educational outcomes for all students. In this keynote address, Dr. Lisa Grillo discusses the challenges that students of color have faced during the pandemic, the systemic conditions that led to these challenges, and culturally responsive strategies school librarians may take in efforts to create equitable schools for all students.
Dr. Lisa Grillo Bio
Dr. Lisa Grillo Assistant Professor, Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, Howard University. As a teacher, leader, and scholar with over 25 years of experience in public education, Dr. Lisa Grillocurrently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the Howard University School of Education. Her research is currently focused on the experiences of Black and Latina women who lead in educational settings. Prior to this role, Lisa successfully led district and school-level initiatives to improve student outcomes for diverse student populations in large urban and suburban school districts. As a principal in the District of Columbia Public Schools, Lisa led her school community in earning Autonomous School Status, an award given to a select cohort of high-performing schools that allows for greater school-based autonomy in the areas of budgeting, instructional programming, and professional development.
