Using Complex Picture Books to Implement Student-Led Discourse
How can social studies teachers safely discuss “controversial” topics with students in a highly polarized society? Rather than introducing viewpoints that might be deemed biased, teachers can use picture books and short texts as the catalyst for student-generated discussions and inquiry around current social issues. For students to be engaged citizens they must have opportunities to connect content to contemporary life. During this session, we will explore methods that allow for organic discussion begin this vital work.
