DEI in Film and Video

The adage that “We learn from the company we keep” has been supplemented with a new thought. “We learn from the media we consume.” Americans are consuming more online videos, music, social media than ever, all without guidance in analyzing online content to detect its intent and bias. Without the skills for critically analyzing digital media, an unsuspecting consumer is vulnerable to adopting perspectives that reinforce negative stereotypes of race, gender, and ethnicity. In this media literacy session, we will use the New York State Culturally Responsive-Sustaining framework to see how film and video can be used to prompt classroom conversations that reveal the intent of the marketers and influencers, the biases of the messenger, and the techniques used to craft their messages.
